American Heart Association’s Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease EVENTs (PREVENT) risk calculator

The American Heart Association has launched the Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease EVENTs (PREVENT) risk calculator, designed to estimate the 10- and 30-year risk of total cardiovascular disease (CVD) in individuals aged 30 years and older. PREVENT combines cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic health measures to assess the risks of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.

These equations are unique because they don’t consider race, are specific to biological sex, and include kidney health as a factor in the risk assessment. Additionally, they can be adjusted to include measures like urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio and hemoglobin A1c, which are important for Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic conditions and social determinants of health if that information is available.

This tool marks an advancement from previous models like the Pooled Cohort Equation, which focused only on 10-year risk predictions for specific age groups and did not include heart failure risk. PREVENT also emphasizes early intervention and prevention, particularly for younger adults, by providing long-term (30-year) risk estimations.
