Krebs cycle
The Krebs cycle is a biochemical metabolic pathway that plays an important role in cellular respiration, the process by which living cells produce energy. It is also known as the citric acid cycle or TCA cycle. The Krebs cycle occurs in mitochondria. It consists of a series of enzyme-catalyzed chemical reactions that convert acetyl-CoA, derived from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, into carbon dioxide and water, ATP (adenosine triphosphate), NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), and FADH2 (flavin adenine dinucleotide). The Krebs cycle is central to aerobic respiration, providing the electron carriers that feed into the electron transport chain where a large part of cellular ATP is generated. Beyond its pivotal role in energy production, the Krebs cycle is also crucial for the biosynthesis of amino acids and the regulation of cellular metabolism, making it essential for the growth, maintenance, and functioning of cells.
