Antibodies
Antibodies play an essential role in our active immune system. They are also known as immunoglobulins. B lymphocytes produce them. Their primary function is identifying microbial pathogens like bacteria and viruses and helping neutralize them. Antibodies are Y-shaped molecules consisting of two heavy and two light chains, which create a unique binding site. This site specifically recognizes and binds to antigens, which are unique molecules or molecular structures on the surface of pathogens. This binding can neutralize the pathogen or mark it for further interaction and destruction by other immune cells. The remarkable diversity of antibodies allows the immune system to recognize an expansive range of foreign invaders, providing the basis for the body’s adaptive immune response. Antibodies are also implicated in autoimmune disorders, where they mistakenly target and attack the body’s tissues and cells.
