Area Under The Curve
“Area Under the Curve” (AUC) is a fundamental principle in mathematics and various applied fields, such as statistics, economics, and engineering. It refers to the area enclosed by a graph’s curve and the coordinate system’s axes. In mathematical analysis, calculating the area under a curve can involve integration, where the integral of a function over a specified interval gives the accumulated area. In statistics and machine learning, the term AUC is often used in relation to the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. The ROC curve measures a model’s ability to distinguish between negative and positive classes at all possible thresholds. A higher AUC value indicates better performance of the model, with a score of 1.0 indicating a perfect model and a score of 0.5 suggesting no ability to distinguish between classes.
