Bladder

The bladder, an essential component of the human urinary tract, is a flexible, balloon-like organ that sits in the pelvic region. Its primary function is storing urine from the kidneys through the ureters until a person urinates. Structurally, the bladder’s interior is lined with a mucous membrane with several layers of transitional cells that allow it to expand without losing integrity. The bladder is supported by pelvic muscles and is controlled by a complex coordination of nervous system inputs that regulate its contraction and relaxation. Internal and external sphincter muscles mediate these functions; the internal sphincter is involuntary, maintaining urine retention passively, while the external sphincter provides voluntary control over the timing of urine release. The health of the bladder is paramount, as disorders such as infections (like cystitis), bladder stones, and bladder cancer can significantly impact its function and an individual’s overall quality of life. Regular urinary habits and hydration are essential for maintaining bladder health and function.
