C-11 choline PET

C-11 Choline PET is a specific type of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan that uses a radioactive form of choline labeled with carbon-11 (C-11) as its tracer. C-11 Choline PET is useful in detecting and evaluating prostate cancer. Choline is a nutrient that cancer cells metabolize at a higher rate than normal cells, making it an effective marker for identifying cancerous tissues. When C-11 choline is injected into the bloodstream, it accumulates more in cancer cells than in normal tissues. The PET scan then detects the radiation emitted by the tracer to produce detailed images, highlighting areas of increased choline metabolism. This allows physicians to locate both primary prostate tumors and metastatic lesions, especially in cases where other imaging techniques have been inconclusive. C-11 Choline PET scans are valuable for staging prostate cancer, guiding biopsy and treatment decisions, and monitoring response to therapy.
