Folate

Vitamin B9, also known as Folate, is a water-soluble vitamin. It is essential for synthesizing and repairing DNA and RNA, making it necessary for cell division and growth, particularly during rapid growth such as pregnancy and infancy. Folate is also involved in the bone marrow production of red and white blood cells. One of its critical roles is preventing neural tube defects in developing fetuses, which is why folate supplementation is highly recommended for pregnant women. Folate/Vitamin B9 is naturally found in leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, and whole grains. In many countries, grain products are fortified with folic acid, a synthetic version, to help prevent deficiencies. Folate deficiency leads to health problems, including megaloblastic anemia, impaired immune function, spinal cord dysfunction, and, in severe cases, congenital disabilities. Its importance in health and development underscores the need for adequate folate intake through diet and supplementation when necessary.
