Lactate
Lactate, commonly known as lactic acid, is an organic compound produced in the body during anaerobic metabolism, such as during intense exercise. Lactate is produced from pyruvate, an intermediate molecule in the breakdown of glucose, through the action of lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. Research has revealed that lactate is an important fuel source for muscles, the brain, and other tissues. It can be converted back to glucose in the liver through gluconeogenesis, thus serving as a crucial link in the body’s energy metabolism. Lactate also plays a role in cell signaling and is being studied for its potential involvement in several physiological and pathological processes.
