Lutein

Lutein is a naturally occurring carotenoid in various fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based foods. It is known for its yellow-to-orange color and plays a critical role in eye health, being one of the predominant pigments present in the macula. Lutein is a natural antioxidant, protecting the eyes from harmful high-energy waves like ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Studies suggest that a diet high in lutein could lower the risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, two significant causes of vision impairment and blindness. Beyond its benefits for eye health, lutein is also believed to affect skin health positively and may have anti-inflammatory properties. While the body cannot synthesize lutein, it can be readily obtained through dietary sources such as leafy green vegetables (like spinach and kale), egg yolks, and various fruits. Its importance in maintaining good vision and potentially other health benefits makes lutein a valuable component of a healthy diet.
