Malaria Vaccine
The development of a malaria vaccine represents a significant milestone in the fight against this deadly disease. The world’s first vaccine, RTS,S/AS01, with the trade name Mosquirix, has shown promise in reducing the number of malaria cases. This vaccine works by targeting the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, which is responsible for most malaria deaths. While the efficacy of RTS,S/AS01 is not 100%, it offers partial protection against malaria, reducing the severity and frequency of the disease’s episodes in vaccinated individuals. This RTS,S/AS01 vaccine received a WHO recommendation in 2021. The second malaria vaccine to receive the WHO recommendation is R21/Matrix-M. Introducing the malaria vaccine into national immunization programs is a complex process, requiring consideration of factors such as cost-effectiveness, health infrastructure, and vaccine supply. However, even with these challenges, the malaria vaccine is a key tool to decrease the impact of malaria, particularly among vulnerable populations like young children.
