Mammography
Mammography is a medical imaging technique used primarily for the early detection and diagnosis of cancer of the breast. It involves using low-dose X-rays to create detailed images that can help identify abnormalities in breast tissue, such as tumors or microcalcifications that may not be palpable or visible through other means. Mammograms are typically recommended for women as a regular screening tool, starting at certain ages or earlier for those with a higher risk of breast cancer, as per various health guidelines. Mammograms can be divided into screening mammograms for women without symptoms and diagnostic mammograms for those with detected abnormalities. Digital mammography, a recent advancement, captures images electronically, allowing for clearer, more precise images that can be easily stored and transferred. Despite some discomfort during the procedure and concerns about radiation exposure, mammography remains a critical tool for early breast cancer detection, significantly aiding in reducing mortality rates from this disease.
