Metabolic Dysfunction–Associated Steatotic Liver Disease

Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MAFLD), represents a spectrum of liver conditions associated with metabolic dysfunctions, including insulin resistance, obesity, and dyslipidemia. It is previously known as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Pathologically, there is excessive accumulation of fat in liver cells. MAFLD can progress from simple steatosis (fat accumulation) to more severe forms like steatohepatitis (inflammation and liver cell damage), potentially leading to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. The pathogenesis of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MAFLD) is complex, involving genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Diagnosis typically requires imaging studies, blood tests, and occasionally liver biopsy. Management strategies primarily focus on lifestyle interventions like diet and exercise and controlling associated metabolic conditions such as diabetes and hyperlipidemia. The increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes rates globally has made Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MAFLD) an increasingly common and concerning health issue worldwide.
