Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions, known as apneas, can occur numerous times per night, reducing oxygen supply to the brain and other body parts. Sleep apnea symptoms include snoring, gasping for air during sleep, daytime fatigue, and morning headaches. There are 2 different types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. In Obstructive sleep apnea the airway is blocked by soft tissue collapse, and in central sleep apnea when the brain doesn’t send appropriate signals to breathing muscles. Sleep apnea risk factors include obesity, age, and family history. Without further intervention, sleep apnea can further lead to health complications like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Treatment options range from lifestyle changes and breathing devices to surgery, depending on the severity and type of apnea.
