Swedish Trauma Registry

The Swedish Trauma Registry (SweTrau), established by The Swedish Trauma Society in 2008 and operational since June 2011, is a pivotal system for enhancing trauma care across Sweden. Its key role is to monitor and assess the care of trauma patients, identifying strengths and weaknesses across various patient categories, geographical areas, and hospitals. It focuses on the entire spectrum of trauma care, from prehospital stages to posthospital rehabilitation and outcomes. Swedish Trauma Registry’s nationwide framework aims to evaluate patient outcomes and quality indicators crucial for patient safety and supports extensive clinical research and studies. It employs primary measures like survival rates relative to injury severity and the Glasgow Outcome Scale for disability, involving 48 of the 49 Swedish hospitals that treat serious trauma. These hospitals are tasked with data management and compliance with legal standards, and the registry enables international comparison through metrics like Injury Severity Score/ New Injury Severity Score. The Swedish Trauma Registry is also an essential resource for scientific and epidemiological research, requiring all projects to comply with ethical guidelines and be reported to its steering group.
