Flaxseed oil
Flaxseed oil, produced from the seeds of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum), is a rich source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid. This oil is highly valued for its potential health benefits, especially its role in heart health and anti-inflammatory properties. The presence of alpha-linolenic acid makes flaxseed oil a popular supplement, especially among those who may not consume other sources of omega-3 fatty acids like fish. In addition to omega-3s, flaxseed oil contains other beneficial compounds such as lignans, which may have antioxidant and estrogen properties. It is often used in a variety of applications, ranging from dietary supplements to a condiment in culinary practices. However, due to flaxseed oils high concentration of polyunsaturated fats, flaxseed oil is prone to oxidation and should be stored properly to prevent rancidity. It’s not suitable for high-temperature cooking due to its low smoke point.
