Venous Thromboembolism

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is characterized by the formation of blood clots in the vein. It primarily includes two related conditions: deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Deep venous thrombosis occurs when a clot forms in the body’s deep veins, such as the legs. This is associated with pain, swelling, and redness. When a part of this clot breaks off, it can travel through the bloodstream into the lungs, thus leading to a pulmonary embolism, which is a critical situation as it can block blood flow and cause shortness of breath, chest pain, and even death. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is influenced by factors such as prolonged immobility, surgery, certain medications, and underlying medical conditions. Prompt diagnosis and treatment, typically with anticoagulants, are vital to prevent serious complications.
